The intimacy of personal writing leaves the author with no bush to hide behind and often ignites comments with high octane emotional content. Online critiquing can easily swerve off subject, be unnecessarily harsh or cause a writer to doubt the value of their work.

When workshop participants are talking to a computer screen rather than a live human being they can say things they would never say in person. Too many comments in raw form are discouraging rather than encouraging and defeat the purpose of the workshop.

Comments need to be moderated for helpfulness by the instructor who may not have that kind of time. The number of workshops and conferences is overwhelming. This year, I took a short Memoir course at a major university by a "name" author. But the author just superficially read the submissions, gave a few general comments "Show, Don't Tell"and turned the class over to the other students to make comments, creative writing conferences.

The course was very disappointing. Request info for workshops or conferences, or online courses where at least the majority of the instruction comes from the instructor. For memoir and fiction alike, I can recommend LitCamp. Amazing instructors, and yes there is feedback from other students, but also in depth critique from an author, agent, editor or publisher who leads the workshop. And it's a great experience too - the fun of the camp with some serious thinking and talking about writing.
